As those seeking new opportunities find the market getting ever more competitive, it has become more challenging to get noticed by prospective employers and a lot is expected of candidates.

So what’s the best way to stand out from the crowd?

Here are a few small yet impactful changes you can make that might help you secure that ideal role:

  1. Tweak your CV

Remove irrelevant work experience from your CV. It’s important to ensure that the best skills for the job you want are most prominent.

Your CV should be clear, simple and concise for it to be easily readable. If your CV is made up of lengthy paragraphs you won’t stand out. Introduce bullet points and key achievements to effectively showcase your most relevant skills.

2. Clean up your social media

LinkedIn is often used by hiring managers to find new talent or to have a sneak peek prior to interviewing candidates – use that to your advantage! Keep your photo professional, share useful content and be mindful that the likes/ comments on other posts are seen by your connections.

As far as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram goes – what do your accounts say about you? At Dot Recruit we advise whilst job searching to keep your private and professional lives separate. Therefore, it’s definitely worth checking your privacy settings every few months just to make sure they haven’t been changed by any platform-wide updates

  1. Utilise your network

You’ve probably heard the phrase “It’s not what you know, it’s who you know”. With today’s technology, job seekers literally have thousands of prospective employers at their fingertips. Yet there are still many not using LinkedIn to its full potential.

From listing your qualifications and work experience in your profile, to demonstrating how you handle different situations and your soft skills, you can do a lot across these platforms.

Ask old managers/colleagues to write recommendations, direct message hiring managers and recruiters with your CV. Post insightful and interesting industry content. You never know what a connection might lead to!

  1. How many recruiters? Less is more

At Dot Recruit we often see candidates on a proactive mission to secure their dream job send their CV to every agency and advert they can find. What many don’t realise is that this can be counterproductive.

When a client has received your CV through multiple channels it can not only demonstrate a lack of loyalty but also a lack of proper consideration for which roles are right for you. The more widely distributed your CV is, the less of a commodity you are.

It’s in a recruiters best interest to place you and they will have a much higher chance of that if they are offering a unique candidate that the hiring manager doesn’t already have access to.

Our advice, find yourself a select few recruiters with a solid reputation in the market, who can be trusted to represent you well and will pull out all the stops to secure your desired role.

  1. Preparation, Preparation, Preparation

You know what they say; “if you fail to prepare, you prepare to fail”. You may tick every box on the job description but if you don’t know what the company do, you’re not getting an offer. It’s one of the biggest reasons why candidates don’t secure a role, which is why at Dot Recruit we schedule interview preparation time for every single interview.
